Why Double Chins and Soft Jawlines Develop

A double chin or undefined jawline is rarely caused by one factor alone. Understanding the combination at play is essential for effective treatment.

Submental fat — A genetically determined fat pad beneath the chin that is resistant to diet and exercise. Some patients have a prominent submental fat deposit even at a healthy weight — it is a structural characteristic, not necessarily a sign of being overweight.

Skin laxity — Collagen and elastin loss causes the skin along the jawline and neck to loosen and sag, blurring the jaw-neck boundary. This accelerates in Dubai’s UV-intensive climate and is a key driver of early skin ageing.

Bone resorption — The mandible (jawbone) gradually loses volume and projection with age, reducing the skeletal support that defines the jawline from beneath.

Fat pad descent — Buccal and jowl fat pads migrate downward with age, creating heaviness along and below the jawline.

Weight fluctuation — Repeated weight gain and loss can stretch the submental skin beyond its ability to retract, contributing to a persistent double chin appearance even after weight is lost. Injectable fat dissolving solutions (deoxycholic acid or phosphatidylcholine formulations) are micro-injected directly into the submental fat pad. These permanently destroy targeted fat cells, which the body then naturally metabolises and eliminates over the following weeks. The result is a slimmer, more defined chin and neck profile.

Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) is an injectable collagen biostimulator that provides immediate structural definition along the jawline while stimulating your body to produce new collagen over the following months. Endolift Laser (not offered here)

Endolift uses a micro-laser fibre inserted just beneath the skin to deliver thermal energy to the subdermal layer, contracting collagen and coagulating localised fat in one pass. It is worth understanding because it is widely advertised in Dubai for exactly this concern. Dr Azra does not offer Endolift. She separates the two jobs instead: fat dissolving injections for the submental fat pad, then RF microneedling or threads for the laxity — which lets each be dosed to what your neck actually needs.

Worth knowing: a single-session promise is the main selling point you will hear. Two staged treatments take longer but are easier to titrate, and neither requires a fibre under the skin.
