Dermapen Aftercare Guide — Day-by-Day Recovery in Dubai

What to do — and what to avoid — in the 30 days after Dermapen microneedling. A complete clinical protocol from Dr Azra, with UAE climate considerations built in.

Quick Answer

For the first 6–8 hours after Dermapen, apply nothing to your skin — the micro-channels are open and any product can cause irritation or infection. For 24–48 hours, expect redness similar to a light sunburn. Avoid makeup, exercise, saunas, sun exposure, retinol, acids, and other clinical treatments for 5–7 days. Use only the recommended cleanser and hyaluronic acid serum. Daily SPF 50+ is essential for at least 2 weeks. Full collagen response takes 4–6 weeks per session, with peak results at 6 months.

Why Aftercare Matters More Than You Think

Dermapen microneedling creates thousands of microscopic channels through the skin’s protective barrier. These channels stay partially open for several hours and continue healing for days afterwards. During this window, your skin is significantly more permeable, more sensitive, and more vulnerable to irritation, infection, and pigmentation triggers than at any other point in your normal skin cycle.

Aftercare isn’t about avoiding minor inconvenience — it’s about protecting an active wound-healing process that determines how much benefit you actually get from the treatment. Patients who follow aftercare meticulously consistently see better results than patients who skip steps, regardless of whether they had standard Dermapen, Dermapen Exosome, or Dermapen PDRN. The treatment is identical; the difference is what happens in the days afterward.

This guide is the protocol Dr Azra gives to every Dermapen patient at her clinics. It applies to all Dermapen variants — standard, with hyaluronic acid, with exosomes, with PDRN, with PRP — and includes specific adjustments for Dubai’s climate, which presents challenges international guidelines don’t address.

The First 6–8 Hours

The most critical period. Your skin channels are still open and any topical product — including normally safe ones — can enter the dermis directly and cause irritation. The clinic protocol is simple: leave the skin alone.

Do
  • Leave skin completely bare — no products, no makeup, no sunscreen
  • Stay out of direct sun (drive home, then stay indoors)
  • Keep hands clean and avoid touching the face
  • Drink plenty of water — hydration supports healing from inside
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase, ideally a fresh one
  • Sleep slightly elevated if facial swelling is significant
Avoid
  • Any topical product — even sunscreen or moisturiser
  • Touching, rubbing, or picking the face
  • Direct sun exposure
  • Exercise, gym, or anything that causes sweating
  • Hot showers, sauna, steam, hammam
  • Wearing tight headbands, glasses pressing on the face, or hats

Day-by-Day Recovery Timeline

A precise day-by-day walkthrough of what you can expect, what to apply, and what to avoid. These timings are clinical defaults — your individual recovery may be slightly faster or slower.

DAY 0 (TREATMENT DAY)

Treatment evening

How your skin feels: Tight, warm, and red — similar to a moderate sunburn. Slightly swollen.

Apply: Nothing for the first 6–8 hours. After that, only the hyaluronic acid serum provided.

Avoid: Any cleansing, makeup, sunscreen, exercise, hot showers.

DAY 1

Morning after

How your skin feels: Red, slightly tight. Mild itching is normal. Skin feels rough to the touch.

Apply: Gentle pH-balanced cleanser with cool water, pat dry with clean towel. Hyaluronic acid serum. Mineral SPF 50+ before any sun exposure.

Avoid: Makeup, retinol, vitamin C, AHA/BHA, exercise, swimming.

DAYS 2–3

Redness fading

How your skin feels: Redness fades to mild pink. Texture starts feeling rough/sandpaper-like. May start peeling.

Apply: Gentle cleanser, hyaluronic acid, light moisturiser, mineral SPF 50+. Continue avoiding actives.

Avoid: Picking flakes, exfoliation, hot showers, exercise.

DAYS 4–5

Peeling phase

How your skin feels: Light flaking and peeling — this is healthy and means the skin is renewing. Underneath, new skin is smoother.

Apply: Standard gentle skincare. Makeup is OK now if needed. Continue SPF 50+.

Avoid: Still no retinol, AHA/BHA, vitamin C, exfoliating scrubs. Light exercise OK.

DAYS 6–7

Skin renewed

How your skin feels: Peeling finishes. Skin feels noticeably smoother, brighter, more even. Early “glow” visible.

Apply: Resume vitamin C serum if you use it. Light moisturiser. SPF 50+ continues.

Avoid: Retinol and AHA/BHA until day 7+. No other clinical treatments for 2 weeks.

WEEKS 2–4

Collagen building

How your skin feels: Skin continues improving. New collagen production is active beneath the surface. Texture refines further.

Apply: Resume full skincare routine including retinol from day 7+. Daily SPF 50+ remains essential.

Avoid: Other clinical treatments (peels, laser, IPL, fillers) for full 2 weeks minimum.

Dubai-Specific Aftercare Considerations

Standard aftercare protocols are written for European or American climates. Dubai presents specific challenges — intense UV index year-round, aggressive air conditioning, low ambient humidity, and dust — that require additional precautions.

Sun protection — non-negotiable

UV exposure on freshly treated skin is the leading cause of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in UAE patients. Apply mineral SPF 50+ from day 1, reapply every 2 hours when outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat and large sunglasses. Avoid the beach, pool, and outdoor activities entirely for at least 7 days, ideally 14.

Counter AC dehydration

Indoor air conditioning runs constantly in Dubai and aggressively pulls moisture out of healing skin. Use a humidifier in your bedroom for the first week, drink 2.5–3 litres of water daily, and apply hyaluronic acid serum at least twice a day. Dehydrated skin heals slower and produces more visible flaking.

Dust & particulate exposure

Dubai air carries fine particulate dust, especially during sandstorms (haboob) and shamal winds. Open skin channels are particularly vulnerable. Avoid outdoor exposure during dusty conditions for the first 5 days. If you must go outside, cover your face with a clean light scarf and cleanse gently afterwards.

Heat exposure

Heat causes vasodilation and prolongs redness. Avoid saunas, hammams, hot yoga, jacuzzis, and prolonged hot showers for at least 7 days. In summer months (May–September), limit time outdoors and stay in cool environments. Schedule Dermapen sessions for evenings if possible so you can sleep through the first night without leaving home.

Products to Use and Products to Avoid

A complete list of ingredients and product types that support recovery — and those that will compromise it. When in doubt, skip a product for a week. Skincare resumes faster than people expect.

Safe to Use
  • Days 0–7: Gentle pH-balanced cleanser (no foaming agents, no sulphates)
  • Days 0–7: Pure hyaluronic acid serum
  • Days 1+: Mineral sunscreen SPF 50+ (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based)
  • Days 2+: Ceramide-based moisturiser
  • Days 2+: Centella asiatica (cica) products for redness
  • Days 3+: Peptide serums (gentle formulations)
  • Days 5+: Light vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid below 10%)
  • Day 7+: Resume retinol if previously used
Avoid for 5–7 Days
  • Retinoids: retinol, retinal, tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene
  • Acids: glycolic, lactic, mandelic, salicylic, malic acids
  • Vitamin C: high-concentration L-ascorbic acid (above 10%)
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Exfoliating scrubs and chemical exfoliants
  • Fragranced products (perfumed serums, scented moisturisers)
  • Active anti-acne products
  • Makeup with strong pigments (mineral makeup OK from day 3+)
  • Chemical sunscreens (irritate freshly treated skin; mineral only)

Warning Signs — When to Contact the Clinic

Mild redness, swelling, flaking, and sensitivity are all normal in the first 5 days. The following signs are not normal and require contact with the clinic immediately. Save the clinic’s WhatsApp number (+971 50 180 1793) in your phone before your treatment day.

Contact the clinic if you experience
  • Severe swelling lasting beyond 72 hours, or worsening swelling after 48 hours
  • Yellow or green discharge from any treated area
  • Painful pimples, pustules, or spreading rash
  • Cold sore outbreak (if you have a history of herpes — antiviral medication may be needed)
  • Fever, chills, or systemic illness symptoms
  • Severe burning or pain that does not subside with cool compresses
  • Unusual bruising patterns or persistent dark patches after 7 days
  • Any concern about the appearance or feel of your skin that worries you

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for the first 6–8 hours. Your channels are still open and washing introduces water, products, and bacteria that can irritate the skin. After 8 hours, you can cleanse gently with cool water and a pH-balanced sulphate-free cleanser. Pat dry — never rub. The day after treatment, return to your normal cleansing routine with gentle products only.
Day 3 onwards for most patients. The skin channels are typically closed by 24 hours but the skin remains sensitive and slightly inflamed for 48–72 hours. Heavy makeup applied earlier traps bacteria in the recovering skin and increases breakout risk. From day 3, mineral makeup is safer than liquid foundations because the particles sit on the surface rather than penetrating freshly healed skin.
Light walking is fine from day 2. Moderate exercise from day 3–4. Full gym workouts, hot yoga, and high-sweat activities only from day 5+. Sweat is irritating to healing skin, raises facial temperature, and prolongs redness. Swimming (pool or sea) should wait until day 7 minimum because of chlorine, bacteria, and sun exposure.
Wait at least 2 weeks before any other clinical treatment. This includes chemical peels, laser, IPL, HIFU, RF treatments, fillers, and Botox. The skin needs time to complete its initial healing and collagen response before another procedure is layered on. Treating too soon compromises both treatments and increases complication risk.
Yes — and it’s actually a healthy sign that the skin is renewing. Light flaking typically begins on day 3–4 and continues for 2–3 days. The skin underneath is smoother and brighter. Do not pick or peel the flakes — let them shed naturally. Picking can cause scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in melanin-rich skin.
Freshly treated skin is highly susceptible to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation triggered by UV exposure. A single hour of unprotected sun on day 2 can cause dark patches that take months to fade. In Dubai’s UV environment this risk is significantly elevated compared to temperate climates. Mineral SPF 50+ from day 1 onwards is the single most important aftercare step.
Side and stomach sleeping creates friction between the pillow and the treated skin, which can irritate and prolong healing. Try to sleep on your back for the first 2 nights. Use a fresh pillowcase. If you have facial swelling, sleep slightly elevated with an extra pillow to reduce fluid accumulation overnight.
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and 48 hours after treatment. Alcohol dehydrates the skin, slows wound healing, and increases bruising risk by thinning the blood. After 48 hours, moderate alcohol is fine but stay well hydrated. Heavy drinking during recovery week delays results.
The core protocol is identical — sun protection, no actives for 5–7 days, no other treatments for 2 weeks. The recovery timeline may be slightly different: PDRN often produces faster surface healing due to its anti-inflammatory properties, while exosome protocols may have slightly more pronounced collagen-stimulating effects in the first week. The aftercare instructions in this guide apply to all Dermapen variants. See Dermapen Exosome treatment.
Two weeks is the absolute minimum for Dermapen before an important event — and only if your skin recovers well and you don’t tend to bruise easily. The safer window is 4 weeks. If you have a major event in less than 14 days, postpone the treatment. The risk of arriving at the event with visible redness, peeling, or bruising is not worth it.
Initial improvements in texture and radiance appear within 2–4 weeks. After a complete 3-session course, substantial improvement is visible at 2–3 months. Collagen production continues for up to 6 months after the final session, so the full result develops over time. Don’t judge results from a single session — Dermapen is a course-based treatment.
