This guide covers recovery only. The treatment itself — in brief, from the Laser Hair Removal in Abu Dhabi treatment page:

Laser
Candela GentleMax Pro — a 755 nm Alexandrite laser plus a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser, FDA-cleared for all skin types (Fitzpatrick I–VI)
Procedure
Laser pulses delivered with cooling spray, no numbing cream needed; upper lip takes 5–10 minutes, full body 60–90 minutes
Course
Most patients need 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart; annual maintenance sessions (1–2) maintain results long-term
Results
Treated hairs shed naturally over 5–14 days; after a full course, most patients see 70–90% reduction

— Before Your Treatment

How to Prepare (Before Care)

✓ Do

  • Shave the treatment area 12–24 hours before your appointment so the laser targets the follicle root, not surface hair.
  • Keep the skin clean, dry and free of make-up, deodorant, lotion or perfume on the day — arrive with bare, product-free skin.

  • Let us know at your consultation about any new medications, recent tan, pregnancy or skin conditions so we can adjust or reschedule safely.
  • Drink water and moisturise the area in the days leading up to your session (just not on the morning of treatment).
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the area you are treating so freshly lasered skin is not rubbed on the way home.

✗ Avoid before

  • Do not wax, pluck, thread or use epilators for around 4 weeks before — the laser needs an intact follicle to work.
  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tan for at least 2 weeks before; tanned or burnt skin cannot be treated.

  • Stop retinoids, AHAs/BHAs and strong actives on the area for a few days beforehand.
  • Skip bleaching creams on the area, as lightened hair responds poorly to the laser.
  • Avoid other in-clinic treatments on the same area, such as a medical facial, in the days just before a facial-area session.

After Your Treatment — Day by Day

First few hours to day one

24h

Mild redness and small bumps around the follicles (perifollicular oedema) are normal and usually settle within a few hours.

Apply a cool compress and a soothing gel such as aloe vera, and avoid hot showers, sauna, steam room and exercise for 24–48 hours to keep the area calm.

Days 1 to 7 — shedding begins

1–7

Over the first week you may notice treated hairs appear to “grow” and then shed

— this is the follicles pushing out dead hair, not regrowth. Do not pick or scrub; gentle cleansing and daily moisturiser are all the skin needs.

Weeks 2 to 4 — smooth phase

2–4

The treated area feels noticeably smoother as shed hairs fall away.

Keep applying broad-spectrum SPF to any exposed skin and shave only if you need to manage hair between sessions.

Week 6 and your next session

6+

Hair in a new growth cycle begins to surface, which is why sessions are spaced roughly 4–6 weeks apart.

A typical course is 6–8 sessions to catch every follicle in its active phase and achieve lasting reduction.

— Do & Don’t

Aftercare Do’s & Don’ts

Do

  • Apply a cool compress and a fragrance-free soothing gel for the first day if the area feels warm.
  • Use strict broad-spectrum SPF 50 on any treated skin that sees daylight, and reapply through the day.
  • Keep the area clean and moisturised with a gentle, unperfumed cream.

  • Between sessions, shave only to remove hair — this preserves the follicle for your next visit.
  • Wear loose clothing over treated areas for 24–48 hours to avoid friction.
  • Stay consistent with your session schedule so no growth cycle is missed — see current laser hair removal prices for package options.

Avoid after

  • No hot showers, sauna, steam room, hot tubs or exercise for 24–48 hours.
  • No sun exposure, tanning or self-tan on the treated area while it recovers.
  • Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate between sessions — ever.
  • Avoid scrubs, exfoliants, retinoids and strong actives on the area for at least 48 hours.

  • Skip perfumed products, deodorant (for underarms) and make-up on the treated area for 24 hours.
  • Do not pick, scratch or rub any small bumps or shedding hairs.

— By Treatment Area

Aftercare by Area Treated

The rules above apply everywhere, but each area has one or two habits that make the difference between skin that settles overnight and skin that stays blotchy for a week. Find the area you are having treated on your laser hair removal course below, or ask at your consultation.

Face & upper lip

Facial skin is thinner and more reactive, so redness can linger a few hours longer than on the body.

Read moreShow less

Leave make-up off for 24 hours, pause retinoids and acid exfoliants for 48 hours either side of your session, and apply SPF 50 every morning — the face is the one area that is exposed to daylight every single day.

Underarms

No deodorant or antiperspirant for 24 hours; the alcohol and aluminium salts sting freshly treated follicles and are the most common cause of an irritated underarm.

Read moreShow less

Wear a loose cotton top and skip the gym for a day or two, because sweat trapped under the arm keeps the area warm and damp exactly when it needs to stay cool and dry.

Bikini & Brazilian

Friction is the enemy here. Choose cotton underwear and loose trousers for 48 hours

— denim and gym leggings are what turn mild redness into a spot-like rash. Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs and the hammam for two days, since chlorine and heat together are far harsher on treated skin than either one alone.

Legs & arms

These are the largest areas and the most sun-exposed, which makes SPF non-negotiable while your course runs.

Read moreShow less

No beach days, no tanning and no self-tan on treated skin. Between sessions, shave with a fresh blade and a gentle gel rather than dry-shaving, which scratches skin that is still settling.

Back, chest & shoulders

Coarser, denser hair sheds more slowly and small folliculitis-type bumps are more common in the first week.

Read moreShow less

Keep the area clean and dry, skip heavy body oils and thick sunscreens for 48 hours, and let a cotton t-shirt sit between your skin and a backpack or car seat until any redness has gone.

Beard line & neck

Men treating the beard line should not shave over the treated skin for 24 hours — a blade over settling follicles is what causes ingrown-looking bumps.

Use a bland, alcohol-free balm instead of aftershave, and expect the shed to look like patchy stubble for a few days before it clears.

— The Three That Matter Most

Sun, Heat and Skincare in the UAE

Almost every laser session that has to be postponed, and almost every reaction we are asked about on WhatsApp, comes back to one of these three. Get them right and the rest of the aftercare looks after itself.

Sun — the two-week rule

A laser targets pigment. Tanned skin holds more melanin, so the beam can no longer tell tanned skin from pigmented hair, which risks burns and patches of darkening or lightening.

Read moreShow less

Keep the area out of deliberate sun for two weeks before every session, avoid tanning beds and self-tan completely, and use broad-spectrum SPF 50 afterwards, reapplied every two hours outdoors. A recent tan means we reschedule — it is not us being cautious for the sake of it.

Heat — 24 to 48 hours off

Heat keeps the treated follicles open and inflamed.

Read moreShow less

For the first day or two that means no gym, no sauna, steam room or hammam, no hot tubs, no very hot showers and no beach. Lukewarm water only, and pat the skin dry rather than rubbing. This is the rule most often broken and the single most common reason someone messages us about bumpy, itchy skin two days later.

Skincare — go bland

Pause retinoids, glycolic and salicylic acids, benzoyl peroxide, scrubs and any at-home device on the area for 48 hours either side.

DetailsShow less

A fragrance-free moisturiser and sunscreen are all treated skin needs. Tell us at your consultation if you use prescription acne or pigmentation medication — some, such as oral isotretinoin, need a gap before laser treatment.

— Before Your Next Session

Tell Us Before You Are Treated

Laser hair removal is very safe when the settings match your skin on the day. A few things change those settings, so please mention any of the following when you check in — a two-minute conversation is always better than a rescheduled session.

New medication

Some medicines make skin photosensitive, including certain antibiotics, oral acne treatments and herbal supplements such as St John’s wort. Bring the name of anything you have started since your last visit.

Recent sun, tan or travel

A beach holiday, a tanning bed or self-tan in the last two weeks means the area cannot be treated safely. Let us know when you book rather than on the day, and we will simply move your appointment.

Pregnancy or breastfeeding

There is no evidence that laser harms a pregnancy, but hormonal hair growth makes results unpredictable, so we usually postpone a course until afterwards and discuss timing with you first.

Cold sores or skin flares

If you get cold sores and the upper lip or chin is being treated, tell us — antiviral cover can be arranged in advance. Active eczema, psoriasis, an acne flare or any infection in the area means we treat around it or wait.

Recent treatments in the same area

Injectables, a chemical peel, microneedling or a medical facial on the same area within the past two weeks changes how the skin responds. So does waxing, threading or plucking within the past four weeks.

Hormonal conditions

PCOS, thyroid conditions and some hormone treatments keep stimulating new follicles. Laser still works very well, but expect a longer course and occasional maintenance sessions — we will plan that with you rather than leave you guessing.

— Normal vs Not Normal

What Is Normal — and What Is Not

Expected and harmless

  • Warmth and mild redness for a few hours, like light sunburn.
  • Small raised bumps around the follicles that settle within a day.
  • Hairs appearing to grow out of the skin during week one before shedding.
  • Slight itching as the shed finishes, easing with a plain moisturiser.

  • Patchy-looking regrowth between sessions — different follicles are simply on different cycles.

Message us the same day

When to contact the clinic. Redness, warmth and small follicular bumps for a few hours are completely normal after laser hair removal and settle on their own.

DetailsShow less

However, please get in touch promptly if you notice blistering, crusting, unusual swelling that worsens after 48 hours, signs of infection such as spreading redness or pus, or any change in skin colour (darkening or lightening) in the treated area. Dr Azra and the team are here to reassure and guide you — message us on WhatsApp +971 50 180 1793 and we will advise on the next step.

  • Blistering, crusting or an open area of skin.
  • Swelling that is getting worse rather than better after 48 hours.
  • Spreading redness, heat, pus or anything that looks infected.
  • Skin that has become noticeably darker or lighter in the treated area.
  • Pain that a cool compress and a plain moisturiser are not settling.

— Common Questions

Laser Hair Removal Aftercare FAQ

How long does redness last after laser hair removal?

Mild redness and small bumps around the follicles typically fade within a few hours and almost always within 24 hours. A cool compress and a soothing gel help the skin settle faster. If redness is still noticeable after a day or two, message us on WhatsApp and we will check in on you.

When can I exercise or use the sauna again?

Avoid exercise, hot showers, sauna, steam room and hot tubs for 24–48 hours. Heat and sweat can irritate freshly treated follicles, so give the skin a full day or two to calm before returning to your usual routine.

Can I wear make-up or wash the area afterwards?

You can cleanse gently with lukewarm water the same day, but avoid make-up, deodorant and perfumed products on the treated area for about 24 hours. If you have had a facial area treated and want a gentle skin refresh later in your course, a HydraFacial can be scheduled on a non-laser day.

When will I see results and how many sessions do I need?

Treated hairs shed over the first one to two weeks, and you will see progressively smoother skin with each visit. Because hair grows in cycles, a course of 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart is typical for lasting reduction. You can review packages on our price list.

Is it normal for hair to look like it is growing after treatment?

Yes — in the days after your session, treated hairs often appear to push out of the skin before shedding. This is the follicle expelling dead hair, not new growth. Do not wax or pluck it; simply let it fall away or shave if needed, and book your next laser session on schedule.
