Chemical Peel — Before & After Care
How to Prepare (Before Care)
- Stop retinoids, retinol and AHA/BHA acids about 5 days before your peel so the skin barrier is calm and not over-sensitised.
- Keep your skin well moisturised and hydrated in the days leading up to the appointment.
- Tell Dr Azra about any history of cold sores — antiviral cover may be advised before the peel.
- Arrive with clean, product-free skin and no make-up on the day of treatment.
- Book your peel with enough social downtime around it, as light flaking is expected on days 2–5.
- No recent sun exposure, tanning beds or sunburn — peeling recently tanned skin raises the risk of uneven pigment.
- No waxing, threading, hair removal creams or aggressive scrubs on the area for about a week before.
- Avoid other resurfacing treatments (microdermabrasion, laser) too close to your peel date.
- Skip strong actives — retinoids, high-strength vitamin C and exfoliating acids — in the days before.
- Do not book a peel over active, broken or infected skin; let Dr Azra assess it first.
After Your Treatment — Day by Day
Redness & tightness
Immediately after, skin often looks flushed, feels tight and slightly warm, a little like mild sunburn. This settles within hours to a day. Keep skin bare, cool and generously moisturised, and do not apply any make-up or actives yet.
Flaking & peeling
Around days 2–5 the skin begins to flake and peel as the treated surface sheds — this is the peel doing its job. Let it come away on its own, keep it hydrated, and resist the urge to pick, rub or exfoliate.
Fresh, glowing skin
By the end of the first week the flaking is complete and brighter, smoother, more even-toned skin is revealed. Continue gentle moisturiser and strict daily SPF; you can slowly reintroduce your normal routine once fully healed.
Building your result
A single peel refreshes the skin, but a planned series — typically every 4–6 weeks — gives the best results for pigmentation, texture and radiance. Dr Azra will map out the ideal schedule at your review.
Aftercare Do’s & Don’ts
- Keep the skin well moisturised with a gentle, fragrance-free cream while it heals.
- Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every single morning — sun protection is the most important step after a peel.
- Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild, non-foaming cleanser using your fingertips only.
- Let all flaking and peeling fall away naturally on its own timeline.
- Drink plenty of water and give your skin cool, calm conditions while it renews.
- Wait until the skin is fully healed before restarting retinoids, acids and other actives — ask Dr Azra when you are unsure.
- Do not pick, peel, scratch or pull at the flaking skin — this can cause scarring and dark marks.
- No actives — retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, strong vitamin C or scrubs — until the skin has completely recovered.
- Avoid direct sun, tanning and sunbeds; wear a hat and stay in shade for the first weeks.
- No heat, exercise, sweating, saunas, steam rooms or hot showers for 48–72 hours.
- Skip make-up and heavy products while the skin is actively peeling.
- Do not book waxing, threading or other resurfacing treatments on the area until fully healed.
