How to Judge a Dermapen Before and After Photo
A before-and-after photograph is only as honest as the conditions it was taken in. A softer light, a closer crop, a different head tilt or a layer of base makeup can manufacture an improvement the skin never made — which is why every case on this page is photographed under the same conditions at each visit. Four things are worth checking in any clinic’s gallery, including this one.
What a photograph will not show you. Microneedling remodels the upper and mid dermis, and that is the boundary of what it can change. It does not replace lost facial volume, it does not lift skin that has become lax, and it will not fully erase deep ice-pick scars or static wrinkles that are already visible when the face is completely at rest. Those concerns need different tools, and a gallery that appears to show otherwise is usually showing a change in lighting rather than a change in skin.

Who Should Not Have Dermapen Microneedling
Dermapen works by creating a controlled injury that the skin then repairs, so it is not right for every patient — and several of the reasons below mean not yet rather than never. Dr Azra reviews your medical history, your current medication, and the skin in the treatment area itself before the first pass. These are the situations that come up most often in clinic; the lists are not exhaustive, and nothing here replaces an in-person assessment.

- Active infection in the treatment area — bacterial, fungal, or an active cold sore (herpes simplex) outbreak.

- Active inflammatory or cystic acne in the area to be treated. The acne is settled first; the scarring it leaves behind is treated afterwards.
- A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring.
- Active eczema, psoriasis, or a rosacea flare in the area to be treated.
- A changing mole, an undiagnosed lesion, or diagnosed skin cancer in the treatment area — this needs a dermatological opinion first.
- A bleeding disorder, or anticoagulant medication that your prescribing doctor cannot safely pause.

Deep ice-pick and tethered acne scars need releasing before needling adds much; visible skin laxity responds to RF microneedling rather than to needle depth alone; and lines that stay visible with the face at rest are a different question again. If Dermapen is not what will get you the result you came for, Dr Azra will say so at the consultation and set out what will.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding — deferred as a standard precaution. There is no urgency to treat during this period, and your course is planned for afterwards.
- Oral isotretinoin (Roaccutane) — a settling period is allowed after your final dose. Tell us the month you finished and the timing is planned around it.
- Sunburn, a fresh tan, or heavy recent sun exposure in the treatment area.
- A peel, laser, or injectable treatment in the same area within the past two weeks.
- A cold sore anywhere on the face until it has fully healed. Patients who get them often can be given antiviral cover before the session.
- Blood thinners and retinoids are paused before treatment — blood thinners for one week, retinoids for three days — so the session is scheduled with that window in mind.
