Sculptra — Before & After Care
How to Prepare (Before Care)
- Arrive with clean, make-up-free skin, or plan to have it gently cleansed in clinic.
- Stay well hydrated and eat a light meal beforehand to avoid feeling faint.
- Tell Dr Azra about any medications, supplements, allergies or a history of cold sores.
- Reschedule if you have an active skin infection, acne breakout or cold sore in the area.
- Plan the timing of any big events — results build gradually and mild swelling is common early on.
- Blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and high-dose vitamin E for 24 hours (unless prescribed).
- Alcohol for at least 24 hours, as it thins the blood and worsens bruising.
- Retinoids, acids and aggressive exfoliation on the area for a few days prior.
- Facials, peels, waxing or laser on the treatment zone in the days before.
- Booking Sculptra immediately before travel or a major social occasion.
After Your Treatment — Day by Day
First 24–48 hours
Expect mild swelling, redness, tenderness and possibly small bruises at the injection points — this is normal and settles quickly. Some early puffiness can make the area look temporarily fuller than the final result; this is water and swelling, not the product itself. Apply a cool compress if needed and avoid heat, exercise, sauna and steam.
Days 1–5 — the massage window
This is the most important part of Sculptra aftercare. Massage the treated area exactly as instructed — commonly the “5-5-5” rule: about 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days. Firm, even massage helps distribute the product smoothly and reduces the risk of lumps or nodules. Follow Dr Azra’s specific guidance for your treatment.
Weeks 1–2
Swelling fully resolves and the area may look as it did before treatment — this is expected, because Sculptra works by stimulating new collagen rather than adding instant volume. Avoid facials, peels and other treatments on the area for about two weeks, and protect your skin daily with SPF.
Weeks 6–12 and beyond
New collagen forms gradually, so your skin becomes firmer, smoother and subtly fuller over 6–12 weeks. Most people need a short series of sessions spaced several weeks apart for full correction, after which results can last well over two years. This slow build is what makes Sculptra a leading treatment for collagen loss.
Aftercare Do’s & Don’ts
- Massage the area exactly as instructed — the 5 minutes, 5 times daily, for 5 days routine is essential.
- Use a cool compress for the first day or two to ease swelling and tenderness.
- Apply a broad-spectrum SPF every day to protect newly stimulated collagen.
- Keep the skin gently hydrated and take paracetamol if you need mild pain relief.
- Sleep slightly elevated on the first night to help reduce facial puffiness.
- Attend your follow-up and any scheduled top-up sessions for the best long-term result.
- Strenuous exercise, sauna, steam room and hot yoga for 24–48 hours.
- Alcohol and blood thinners for at least 24 hours to limit bruising.
- Facials, peels, microneedling, laser and massage machines on the area for about two weeks.
- Direct sun, tanning beds and extreme heat while the skin settles.
- Heavy make-up over injection points for the first 24 hours.
- Pressing or resting on the area for long periods on the first night.
