Filler Aftercare Guide
Proper aftercare helps your dermal filler settle optimally, reduces swelling, and protects your results. Dr Azra Vaziri provides all patients with aftercare guidance — here is the complete guide.
First 24 Hours
- Apply cold compresses (wrapped in cloth) for swelling
- Sleep on your back with head elevated
- Stay hydrated — HA binds to water
- Take paracetamol if needed for discomfort
- Keep the area clean
- Do not touch, press, or massage the treated area
- No makeup on injection sites for 12 hours
- No alcohol for 24 hours
- No intense exercise or heat (sauna, steam, hot yoga)
- No ibuprofen or aspirin (increases bruising)
First Week
- Swelling is normal and peaks at 24–48 hours, then gradually resolves
- Mild bruising may occur — arnica cream can help
- Avoid dental work for 2 weeks if you had filler near the mouth
- Avoid facials, chemical peels, or laser treatments for 2 weeks
- If you had nose filler — no glasses resting on the bridge for 48 hours
- If you had lip filler — avoid puckering, straws, and extreme lip movements for 48 hours
- If you had jawline or chin filler — avoid leaning on hands, chewing gum
- Results improve as swelling settles — final result at 2–3 weeks
Long-Term Care
- SPF 50 daily — UV degrades hyaluronic acid. Essential in Dubai.
- Stay hydrated — HA is a moisture-binding molecule
- Good skincare routine — supports skin quality around filler
- Book follow-up at 2–4 weeks — Dr Azra reviews results and assesses if touch-up is needed
- Plan maintenance — top up before filler fully fades (duration guide · pricing)
While complications are rare, contact the clinic if you experience:
- Increasing pain that worsens after 48 hours
- Skin colour changes (white blanching or blue/grey discolouration)
- Severe or asymmetric swelling beyond 72 hours
- Fever or signs of infection

How to Reduce Swelling and Bruising After Filler
Some swelling and the occasional bruise are completely normal after dermal filler — they are a response to the injection, not a sign that anything is wrong. A few simple habits speed up your recovery:
- Cold compress, gently: apply a cloth-wrapped cold pack for 10 minutes at a time in the first 24 hours — never ice directly on the skin.
- Arnica & bromelain: arnica cream or tablets and bromelain (pineapple enzyme) can help bruises fade faster.
- Sleep elevated: keep your head raised on an extra pillow for the first two nights to limit fluid pooling.
- Skip blood thinners: avoid alcohol, ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil and vitamin E for 24–48 hours, as they worsen bruising.
- Stay hydrated: hyaluronic acid binds water, so good hydration supports a smooth, settled result.
If you bruise easily, ask Dr Azra about cannula technique, which can reduce bruising compared with needles in many areas.
Aftercare by Treatment Area
Some aftercare is area-specific. Whichever area you had treated, the goal is the same: leave the filler undisturbed while it integrates.
- Lip filler: expect more swelling here than anywhere else for 24–72 hours. Avoid straws, puckering, hot drinks and intense kissing for 48 hours.
- Cheek & jawline filler: avoid resting your face on your hands, sleeping face-down, or chewing gum for a few days.
- Nose filler: keep glasses or sunglasses off the bridge for 48 hours to avoid pressure on fresh filler.
- Under-eye filler: sleep elevated and avoid rubbing the area; mild puffiness can take a little longer to settle here.
