Sculptra — Before & After Care

Sculptra is a collagen biostimulator that works gradually, so how you care for the treated area — especially the massage routine — directly shapes your final result. Follow this Dubai aftercare guide from Dr Azra Vaziri to help your skin build smooth, even, natural-looking collagen over the weeks ahead.
— Before Your Treatment

How to Prepare (Before Care)

Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid biostimulator that stimulates your own collagen, so preparation is about arriving with calm, uninflamed skin. A little planning in the 24 hours beforehand reduces bruising and swelling and gives Dr Azra the best canvas to work with. Learn more about how biostimulator treatments work before your visit.
✓ Do
  • Arrive with clean, make-up-free skin, or plan to have it gently cleansed in clinic.
  • Stay well hydrated and eat a light meal beforehand to avoid feeling faint.
  • Tell Dr Azra about any medications, supplements, allergies or a history of cold sores.
  • Reschedule if you have an active skin infection, acne breakout or cold sore in the area.
  • Plan the timing of any big events — results build gradually and mild swelling is common early on.
✗ Avoid before
  • Blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and high-dose vitamin E for 24 hours (unless prescribed).
  • Alcohol for at least 24 hours, as it thins the blood and worsens bruising.
  • Retinoids, acids and aggressive exfoliation on the area for a few days prior.
  • Facials, peels, waxing or laser on the treatment zone in the days before.
  • Booking Sculptra immediately before travel or a major social occasion.

After Your Treatment — Day by Day

24h

First 24–48 hours

Expect mild swelling, redness, tenderness and possibly small bruises at the injection points — this is normal and settles quickly. Some early puffiness can make the area look temporarily fuller than the final result; this is water and swelling, not the product itself. Apply a cool compress if needed and avoid heat, exercise, sauna and steam.

1–5

Days 1–5 — the massage window

This is the most important part of Sculptra aftercare. Massage the treated area exactly as instructed — commonly the “5-5-5” rule: about 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days. Firm, even massage helps distribute the product smoothly and reduces the risk of lumps or nodules. Follow Dr Azra’s specific guidance for your treatment.

1–2

Weeks 1–2

Swelling fully resolves and the area may look as it did before treatment — this is expected, because Sculptra works by stimulating new collagen rather than adding instant volume. Avoid facials, peels and other treatments on the area for about two weeks, and protect your skin daily with SPF.

6–12

Weeks 6–12 and beyond

New collagen forms gradually, so your skin becomes firmer, smoother and subtly fuller over 6–12 weeks. Most people need a short series of sessions spaced several weeks apart for full correction, after which results can last well over two years. This slow build is what makes Sculptra a leading treatment for collagen loss.

— Do & Don’t

Aftercare Do’s & Don’ts

✓ Do
  • Massage the area exactly as instructed — the 5 minutes, 5 times daily, for 5 days routine is essential.
  • Use a cool compress for the first day or two to ease swelling and tenderness.
  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF every day to protect newly stimulated collagen.
  • Keep the skin gently hydrated and take paracetamol if you need mild pain relief.
  • Sleep slightly elevated on the first night to help reduce facial puffiness.
  • Attend your follow-up and any scheduled top-up sessions for the best long-term result.
✗ Avoid after
  • Strenuous exercise, sauna, steam room and hot yoga for 24–48 hours.
  • Alcohol and blood thinners for at least 24 hours to limit bruising.
  • Facials, peels, microneedling, laser and massage machines on the area for about two weeks.
  • Direct sun, tanning beds and extreme heat while the skin settles.
  • Heavy make-up over injection points for the first 24 hours.
  • Pressing or resting on the area for long periods on the first night.
When to contact the clinic. Mild swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness after Sculptra are completely normal and settle within a few days — and remember the area may look flat again once swelling fades, because collagen builds slowly over weeks. However, please contact us promptly if you notice a firm lump or nodule that does not soften with massage, increasing pain, spreading redness or warmth, signs of infection, skin that turns pale, dusky or unusually painful, or any allergic reaction. Dr Azra and the team are here to reassure you — message us anytime on WhatsApp +971 50 180 1793.

Sculptra Aftercare FAQ

It is the single most important part of your aftercare. Massaging the treated area helps distribute the poly-L-lactic acid evenly so collagen forms smoothly and the risk of lumps is minimised. Most patients follow the “5-5-5” rule — about 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days — using firm, even pressure. Always follow the exact instructions Dr Azra gives you at your Sculptra appointment, as they may be tailored to the area treated.

Sculptra is a biostimulator, so results appear gradually rather than instantly. Any early fullness is just swelling; the real improvement comes as new collagen forms over roughly 6–12 weeks, and often continues to refine after that. Most people need a short series of sessions for full correction, and once complete the results can last well beyond two years — making it one of the most cost-effective options on our price list.

You can return to your normal desk-based day straight away, but avoid strenuous exercise, sauna, steam room, hot yoga and other intense heat for 24–48 hours. Heat and raised blood pressure can increase swelling and bruising in the first day or two. After that you can resume your usual routine, keeping up the massage schedule and daily SPF while the collagen builds.

Yes — you can gently cleanse your face the same evening using lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive product. We recommend avoiding heavy make-up directly over the injection points for the first 24 hours to let them settle. Skip facials, peels, microneedling and mechanical massage devices on the area for about two weeks so the skin can recover undisturbed.

Absolutely, and it’s expected. Sculptra doesn’t add instant volume like some fillers — it stimulates your own collagen, so once the initial swelling settles the area can look much as it did before. The gradual firming and volumising then develops over the following weeks. If you’d prefer a more immediate result, Dr Azra can discuss alternatives such as Radiesse at your consultation.
