Botox or Filler for Nasolabial Folds?
A common search is whether Botox can treat nasolabial folds. In almost every case it cannot, and understanding why saves a wasted appointment. Botulinum toxin works by relaxing a muscle that is creasing the skin. That is the right tool for dynamic lines such as frown lines and crow’s feet, which only appear when the muscle contracts.
The nasolabial fold is not a muscle crease. It is a structural boundary where the cheek pad meets the upper lip, and it deepens because the tissue above it has lost volume and descended. Relaxing the muscles around it does not restore that lost support, and weakening the muscles that lift the upper lip can flatten the smile or make it uneven.
