Lip Filler — Before & After Care
A smooth recovery is what turns a good lip filler treatment into a beautiful, natural-looking result. This guide walks you through exactly how to prepare beforehand and care for your lips afterwards, following the same protocol Dr Azra Vaziri gives every patient in her Dubai clinic.
How to Prepare (Before Care)
Lip filler is a hyaluronic-acid dermal filler injected into the lips, so a little planning in the days before your appointment helps keep swelling and bruising to a minimum and makes your final result cleaner. Here is what to do and what to avoid.
- Arrive with clean lips — no lipstick, gloss or heavy make-up on the day.
- Eat and hydrate well beforehand so you feel comfortable during the appointment.
- Tell Dr Azra about any medications, supplements, allergies or a history of cold sores.
- Plan your treatment at least 2 weeks ahead of any wedding, event or holiday.
- Bring your questions — a proper consultation is part of every treatment.
- Blood thinners — aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E — for 24 hours (unless prescribed).
- Alcohol for at least 24 hours before, as it thins the blood and worsens bruising.
- Booking dental work or a dental cleaning around your appointment date.
- Waxing, threading or facials on the lip area just before.
- Scheduling on a day you are unwell or run down.
After Your Treatment — Day by Day
Your lips will look fuller immediately, but they need a little time to settle. Here is a realistic picture of what to expect in the days and weeks after treatment.
First 24–48 hours
Expect mild swelling, tenderness and possibly a little bruising — this is completely normal and often peaks on the first morning. Sleep slightly elevated the first night, avoid touching or massaging the lips, and skip strenuous exercise, sauna and heat. A cool compress held gently over a cloth can ease swelling.
Days 1–7
Swelling steadily subsides and any bruising begins to fade. Your lips may feel firm or slightly uneven to the touch — this is the product still settling, not the final result. Keep the area clean, drink plenty of water and hold off on facials and lip treatments.
Weeks 2–4
The filler has now integrated with your tissue and your lips look and feel soft and natural. This is when your true shape and volume are visible. Continue daily SPF to protect the delicate lip skin and support long-lasting results.
6 months onward
Hyaluronic-acid lip filler typically lasts around 6–12 months depending on the product and your metabolism. A light top-up before it fully dissipates keeps your look consistent — Dr Azra will advise the right timing at your review.
Aftercare Do’s & Don’ts
Following these simple rules for the first couple of weeks protects your investment and helps your lip filler settle evenly and beautifully.
- Sip water and stay hydrated — hyaluronic acid draws in moisture.
- Apply a cool compress gently over a clean cloth if you feel swollen.
- Sleep on your back and slightly elevated for the first night or two.
- Use a plain lip balm to keep lips comfortable once any pinpoint marks have healed.
- Apply daily SPF to your lips to protect the result.
- Contact the clinic with any concern — we would always rather you asked.
- Touch, press or massage your lips unless Dr Azra has specifically advised it.
- Do strenuous exercise, use a sauna, steam room or hot yoga for 24–48 hours.
- Book dental work, dental cleanings or facials for around 2 weeks.
- Drink alcohol for 24 hours, as it increases swelling and bruising.
- Wear heavy lipstick or use a straw with force for the first day.
- Have another injectable or laser treatment on the area without checking first.
