Botox and Dysport contain the active botulinum toxin surrounded by complexing proteins (hemagglutinins and non-toxic proteins). These proteins don’t contribute to the treatment effect — they are remnants of the manufacturing process. Over time, your immune system can develop antibodies against these proteins, potentially reducing treatment effectiveness.

Xeomin’s XTRACT purification process removes all accessory proteins, leaving only the 150-kDa active neurotoxin. This “naked” formulation has two key advantages: lower immunogenicity (reduced antibody risk with repeated treatments) and room-temperature storage stability (the complexing proteins in Botox and Dysport are what require refrigeration).

Xeomin is 1:1 unit equivalent with Botox — meaning the same number of units produces the same effect. It treats all the same areas with identical technique and dosing. Dr Azra Vaziri recommends Xeomin when clinically appropriate, particularly for patients with frequent treatment schedules or diminishing response to other brands.

Dr Azra may recommend Xeomin specifically in the following situations:

Frequent Botox users — Patients who get neuromodulator treatments every 3–4 months may benefit from the lower antibody risk. Switching to Xeomin periodically or permanently can help maintain long-term responsiveness.

Patients noticing diminishing results — If your Botox or Dysport seems to wear off faster than it used to, or you need more units to achieve the same result, this could indicate antibody formation. Xeomin’s protein-free formulation may restore full responsiveness.

First-time patients — Starting with Xeomin from the beginning may prevent antibody development entirely, giving you a longer effective treatment lifetime with neuromodulators.

Patients who prefer the purest option — Some patients simply prefer a formulation that has been stripped of everything unnecessary. Xeomin is the “clean” choice — only the active ingredient, nothing else.

Xeomin aftercare is identical to Botox aftercare:

• Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for 24 hours
• Stay upright for at least 4 hours after treatment
• Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
• Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and hot yoga for 48 hours
• Avoid alcohol for 24 hours
• Results appear within 3–7 days; full effect at 2 weeks
• Schedule a review appointment at 2–4 weeks if desired
